Description
This is a copy of an original in my personal collection. The horn is HUGE and I am sure made from an Ox Horn. The original is 19 inches long and the base is 3 x 4 inches. From the wear on the horn it was carried on the left side, but the way the hole is drilled in the base it could be worn on either side.
This horn was clearly made out of necessity and in a hurry with minimal tools. The tip was sawed off very close to the cavity so it has a 1/2 inch or better hole, simple wedding band on the tip to retain the strap and a pine plug.
Since I do not have access to ox horns, I am reproducing it with cow horns. Mine is 16 inches long and 3 x 2 1/2 at the base, pine plug and a smaller hole in the tip with a hand turned plug.
The original is full of flaws, scrapes and marks and mine is the same. I have left flaws in it and if you want it to look more like the original take it out into your yard and driveway and kick it around a few times!
My reproduction, like the original can be carried on either side the way it is made, so no need to indicate right or left side carry.
If you are looking to portray Fur Trade/Mountain Man, this is the perfect horn and made after one dated by the owner in 1834, right in the middle of the fur trade era!
Even though it is a simple build, please allow one week for me to Mae it so I can find a similar horn on hand. The one pictured is available.
Made by myself.
