Description
The finished horn pictured is sold, so yours will be slightly different color.
This is a copy of a surviving rifleman’s horn that I personally own. The original has engraved in it R. Long. Reuben Long was in several units of the riflemen and specifically the 11th Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Daniel Morgan, having enlisted in 1776. He fought throughout the war and applied for and received a pension. Reuben was born in St Maries (St. Marys) County Maryland. In June of 1777 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the line.
He fought at the Battles of Great Bridge, Fort Washington, Saratoga, Monmouth, Guilford Courthouse, Hopkirk Hill, Siege of 96, Eutaw Springs
This horn is was originally made in a factory, there were two of them producing horns for the Continental Army. The produced Musket Horns, Artillery Horns and Riflemen Horns like this. Perfect for anyone portraying Morgan’s Riflemen or anyone carrying a rifle in battle and could have received one of these at some point in the war.
The original horns would not have had any finish on them, since they were factory horns. On the tip you see some chip carving which would have been done by the owner. I left it off and produced this as it would have been right out of the factory. You can add the chip carving and engrave your name to make it perfect!
The original is 15 1/2 inches long to the end of the “thumb”, as is the one pictured. I will attempt to make them all consistent with this original, but length and diameter at the base will be out of my control, for the most part, however, I am putting aside horns of this size and shape.
The original base is 3 1/8 in diameter and mine is 2 3/4.
The finished horn pictured is sold, so yours will be slightly different color.
I have seen several originals and no two are alike!!
After receiving it you can dye it with onion skins or tea if you desire.
This is an excellent horn for anyone portraying Colonial Riflemen or former Colonial Riflemen.
Color: Will vary since they were made by contract.
DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY OF THE BUILD, PLEASE ALLOW ONE TO TWO WEEKS FOR ME TO BUILD AND SHIP IT.
